Travel Troubles is an ongoing series about coping with the anxieties that are often experienced while travelling.

Travelling is exciting, eye-opening, and amazing. It’s also scary. Going to a new place, figuring out transportation and currency, dealing with language barriers, it can all be very overwhelming. Travelling solo can be especially intimidating for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Not only do we have all the regular travel stressors but we have added concern over our safety.

Although we may not yet live in a world where every place is safe to be who you are and love who you love, it shouldn’t stop you from exploring it as much as you can. This world is ours as much as anyone else’s. But anxiety can’t always be swayed by logic, so I hope these tips and resources can help you feel more confident in all your future travels.

IGLTA

Now known as The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, IGLTA is a treasure trove of free travel information and resources for the queer community. Find everything you need, from queer friendly tour companies, to the nearest pride event. There are so many ways to find travel inspiration with IGLTA, and feel safe while doing it.

Equaldex

Equaldex is a database for LGBTQ+ rights worldwide. It is continuously updating to provide you with the most relevant information on new laws and regulations to help keep you safe during your travels.

Social Media Groups

I’ve never been much of a social media user, but if you’re looking to meet people and get first hand advice before you travel, then try joining an online LGBTQ+ travel group. Sometimes finding people who relate to you can be hard, but as a queer person you’re never truly alone. Reach out and find your community. If you’re lucky, you might also find some travel buddies.

Tour Radar

If you’re a solo traveller who wants to see as much as they can while on a trip, check out Tour Radar. There you can find tons of multiday group tours all over the world. A tour is a great way to meet new people and feel safe while exploring. Just because you’re travelling solo doesn’t mean you have to be lonely. There are also many international volunteering programs available, so you can explore safely while also helping the world!

Research!

This may not work for everyone, but what helps alleviate my travel anxiety most is research. If you have all the information you need about your destination and itinerary, you’ll be prepared for whatever comes your way. Even if some of your worries seem silly, put your mind at ease with a quick google search, and try to focus on the positive.
