The Portal Bookshop in York has only been open for a few years, but it’s easy to see how it has become an invaluable locale for the queer community. LGBTQ+ bookstores are a rarity, but as a fantasy and sci-fi focused queer bookstore, it’s almost hard to believe a place as magical and unique as the Portal exists.

Only a short walk from the Shambles, the shop sits on a narrow street and invokes that cozy, mystical feeling that fantasy lovers seek out. Though only a small shop, they manage to carry an incredible selection of books and goodies for all ages. There’s a wonderful variety of LGBTQ+ children’s books, as well as stickers, pins, bookmarks, and many other items that are sure to make any booklover smile.

The employees were incredibly welcoming and helpful, and are able to put in orders for you on their online shop for any books they don’t have in store. The Portal also recently started sharing their space with the Over the Rainbow Café located just above the shop. Besides being the perfect place to sit and read, and enjoy a snack, the café will be hosting all sorts of inclusive events!

Clearly, I can’t recommend this store enough. It provides a great opportunity for queer travelers to visit a safe space where they can feel welcome, and it gives locals a chance to support a small LBGTQ+ business.
