The island of Newfoundland has an endless number of adventures to offer, and though St. John’s is only a small part of the province, it doesn’t disappoint. This list highlights only a few of the amazing sights and activities I’ve found!

Signal Hill

The home of Cabot Tower, and the place where the very first transatlantic wireless transmission was received. Signal Hill overlooks the city of St. John from one direction, and boasts beautiful views over the sea from the other. The entire area is laced with amazing hiking trails.

George Street

Covering two blocks of fantastic bars, pubs, and restaurants in historic downtown St. John’s, George Street is the place to go to experience local night life. Whether you’re there for the annual George Street Festival, or just looking to get screeched in, you’re sure to have a wild time!

The Rooms

Newfoundland’s largest cultural centre located in a beautiful, unique building with views of the surrounding city. The Rooms displays a variety of historical and cultural exhibits, as well as local art, archives, and curiosities.

Jellybean Row

Rather than being contained to a single street, jellybean row is a title given to many different clusters of brightly coloured homes all over downtown St. John’s. The buildings are said to have been painted in such vibrant hues to help fisherman find their way home in foggy weather.

Quidi Vidi

Located on the east coast of St John’s, Quidi Vidi is a small historic fishing village filled with many unique small businesses and local craftsman. One of the greatest attractions in town is the Quidi Vidi Brewery, makers of the famous Iceberg Beer!

East Coast Trail

This 336km coastal path stretches all the way from the north to the south end of the island of Newfoundland. Don’t worry if you’re not ready to hike the whole trail, each of the many stops along the way give you the chance to see beautiful views, provincial historical sights, and if you’re lucky you might even see some of the local wildlife.

Whale & Puffin Watching Tour

The Witless Bay Eco Reserve is home to millions of Atlantic puffins. If you’re a lover of these adorable little seabirds you’ll want to head out on a tour between May and September to catch sight of some puffins and whales. To see some amazing icebergs, you’ll have better luck a little earlier in the year.

Spirit of Newfoundland

St. John’s fantastic theatre puts on hilarious comedy shows, holds live music nights, and even has a Screech Room for everything you could ever want to know about Newfoundland rum!

Get a Tattoo

If you’re ready to get a permanent souvenir to celebrate your time on the rock, consider getting a tattoo! For a small city, St. John’s boasts over a dozen tattoo studios. The town’s artistic culture is thriving, and you’ll have your choice of so many talented artists to choose from. I myself recommend Skin City.

Explore!

Not everyone prefers to travel with an itinerary. If you’re the nomadic type, St. John’s will envelop you in vibrant colour and positive energy. Known for the kind locals, it’s a great place for solo travellers to wander around and explore!
