Travel guides are becoming more and more diverse, filling the needs of every travellers’ niche. There’s guides for backpacking, for luxury travel, for travelling with a pet, and even a guide to the best places to kiss in Paris. Whatever you’re hoping to do or see in the world, there’s a guide for it. I’m very excited to tell you about one of my favourite travel guides, In Her Footsteps by Lonely Planet.
With contributions from dozens of authors, In Her Footsteps is a guide to significant places in the lives of significant women. This book gives the reader a map into the lives of some of most amazing women in our history, from activists, scientists, and icons, to artists, writers, and trailblazers. Some of the sights described in this travel guide include the museum, and former home, of Frida Kahlo in Mexico City, the Roseland Theatre attended by Viola Desmond in New Glasgow Canada, and the Maria Sktodowska Museum which stands in the same place as the former home of Marie Curie in Warsaw.
In Her Footsteps also mentions important destinations in the lives many LGBTQ+ trailblazers, such as Audre Lorde, Jan Morris, and Queen Christina of Sweden. I’ve been lucky enough to visit one of these places, Shibden Hall, the former home of Anne lister. Now run as a museum, the hall still holds many tokens from Anne’s life. Personally, being able to explore the place where Anne and her wife made a home together made me feel connected to the queer community and it’s history, and lucky to be a apart of it.
If you too are looking to feel connected to the great women of our past, then I definitely recommend this book. Lonely Planet does a wonderful job of highlighting the contributions of so many of amazing people. This world has been shaped for us by women who wanted us to have more opportunities than they did, including the opportunity to explore. This guide is a reminder that there’s no better time to start exploring than now.
