Homesickness can happen to anyone, no matter how much you love to travel, or how prepared you feel. Travelling, especially long term, can be jarring and lonely. Of course, it can also be exhilarating and wonderful. If you have dreams of seeing the world, you shouldn’t let anything stand in your way. But for the times that you really miss home, you can use these tips to help you cope!

Facetime/Video Call Apps

If you’re travelling with devices, which is likely in this day and age, think about downloading a video calling app. From Zoom, FaceTime, or WhatsApp, there’s a myriad of options to choose from. Being able to speak to your loved ones face to face can make a big difference if you find yourself feeling lonely while away. Remember to keep your devices charged, and pack them safely.

Plan Ahead

This one may seem obvious, but not everyone remembers to check the amenities of their accommodations. Whichever way you decide to travel, make sure that the places you plan to stay offer a free and adequate wifi connection. If you’re travelling off the beaten path, it may be worth investing in an international phone plan. Finding ways to stay connected to your loved ones can be important for your safety, and your mental health.

Mementos

If you’re a sentimental person, try bringing something with you on your trip that reminds you of home. It could be something that you’ve had since childhood, or something that simply reminds you of your friends and family. Having an item that brings you comfort could be useful in a new environment. Many people also like to carry travellers charms with them, such as a Saint Christophers pendant, or vegvisir compass. Whatever you choose, all that matters is that it makes you feel safe.

Keep Busy

Plan, plan, plan. If you’re someone who knows you’ll experience anxiety while in an unfamiliar place, try to keep busy to distract yourself. Make the most of your trip by booking tours, excursions, and activities that will fill your time, and take your mind off of home. Making plans in advance will also help lessen anxiety over deciding what to see, and how to get around, while exploring a new place.

Be Prepared

You might be incredibly independent, or a practised traveller. You might think you’re the last person who would ever feel homesick. But emotions are unpredictable. Before leaving for a trip, it can be worth taking a moment to mentally prepare yourself for possible unexpected feelings and anxiety triggers. If you’re going to be travelling long-term for the first time, you might find yourself missing home more than you ever thought you would. Just remember that you’re not alone, these feelings are normal. You’ve already achieved something wonderful by being brave enough to journey out on your own.
