I recently had the luxury of crossing a place off my bucket list of Canadian literary destinations. With the décor of every room inspired by a different author or creative mind, the Arlington Hotel is one of the most bizarrely wonderful places I’ve ever stayed.
Built in the early 1850’s, the Arlington is the highlight of the historical town of Paris Ontario. Originally called The Bradford House, it’s been run as a local inn for over a century. In the last few years is has been completely revamped into a booklover’s hideaway.
On my first visit I chose to stay in the Agatha Christie room. As anyone who’s ever read a mystery novel should know, Christie was the Queen of mystery herself. Though one of the simpler rooms in the hotel, decorated in the edgy art deco style of the 20’s, this room truly makes you feel like you’ve gone back in time.
The Arlington also features rooms inspired by Jane Austen, Edgar Allen Poe, The Brothers Grimm, J.R.R. Tolkien, and many others. I personally hope to stay in the Lewis Carroll room on my next visit.
Although the town of Paris might lack the grandeur of its namesake, it’s truly one of Ontario’s hidden gems. Amazing restaurants, beautiful little shops, and a delicious chocolatier are scattered along the Grand River.
Paris is also home to the Wincey Mills Co. market place, in which is one of my favourite small businesses. When I first walked into Bird and Bee Vintage I couldn’t decide where to focus my eyes. So many beautiful antiques, quirky collectibles, and an entire section just for colourful handmade bowties!
Of course, all us travel lovers out here are hoping the pandemic will be over soon so that we can fly off to wherever our hearts desire, but don’t forget to explore all the wonderful places right here at home. I’ll definitely be back to Paris ON soon!
